Since free market capitalism seems to be all the rage these days (just take a look at all the ads on this page), what better time to revisit its opposite - communism. And, why not begin with the guy who started it all, Karl Marx. You won't find him in the old Soviet Union though - look in London instead. London, home to royalty, is the resting place of Karl Marx, the father of communism. Marx is buried in the quite funky Highgate Cemetery, where moss covered graves seem to be strewn everywhere. He shares his resting place with over 166,000 other dead people who are crammed into Highgate's 37 acres. Highgate Cemetery actually looks more like the set from a Universal or Hammer horror movie than a real cemetery. You would expect to see Peter Cushing trying to drive a stake through the heart of Christopher Lee here and not the grave of a man who, with the help of Frederick Engels, started a philosophy followed by billions. In fact, not only have horror movies been filmed here but at one time people thought that a real vampire stalked Highgate. You can't really miss Marx's grave. The large well kept headstone really sticks out from the other graves in Highgate Cemetery. Marx is definitely the star of this cemetery even though other famous people are buried here. Other notable people include Michael Faraday, the first man to liquefy gases, and Diana Belcher, who wrote the "The Mutineers of the Bounty." To help you find all the famous people, you are given a map of the gravestones when you enter the cemetery. The scene around Marx's grave is actually quite somber. When we were there, people were leaving flowers around his giant tombstone. Highgate Cemetery used to be a popular stop for visiting communist officials who would earn points back home by having their picture taken with Marx's grave. Highgate Cemetery is a fitting resting place for somebody who led as interesting a life as Marx did. While his philosophy had such a profound effect upon Russia, he actually never went there. Marx did live all over Europe in cities such as Paris, Brussels and London. He also ended up being buried with his mistress. Highgate Cemetery makes a perfect stop for anyone interested in history. You can spend the better part of a day looking for all the famous Londoners who are buried here. While off the beaten path, Highgate Cemetery should be included in any visit to London.
